Our latest ‘Local Hero’ blends two of Scotland’s great loves: whisky and golf. Doug Clement, a one-time golf caddie at the wonderful Kingsbarns Golf Links near St Andrews was frequently frustrated that there was not a single malt whisky distillery in the area. Doug got to work and created an ambitious, exciting and bold business proposal, which attracted 32 investors from around the world who funded the project during its stage 1 start up and planning phase. Securing a grant of £670,442 from the Scottish Government in late 2012, helped enable Doug to bring on board the Wemyss family to assist him in fulfilling his long held ambition of creating a craft distillery by the home of golf…..St Andrews. The distillery will be in the grounds of Cambo Estate, which is nestled in-between St Andrews and Kingsbarns; it’s unlikely that you would find a more picturesque location.
In the meantime Doug is embarking on a one year Distilling Diploma at Heriot-Watt University, representing Wemyss Malts and Darnley's View Gin as an ambassador and plans to get additional experience at a few different distilleries to prepare himself for the challenges that lie ahead when the Kingsbarns Distillery opens mid 2014. We can’t wait!
